Top of the league, you're having a laugh!

So Manchester United have done it, for now at least, and have reached that illustrious goal of the premiership top spot!

Yesterday afternoon, United and City fans sat and watched events unfold as Manchester City lost 1-0 to under dogs Swansea, whilst Rooney managed to put two goals past WBA, securing them a much needed win. With City not gaining any points, it meant United overtook their 66 points and went top, with 1 point to spare. Manchester City had been sat at the top of the table for 5 months, with United desperately chasing behind them, luckily Swansea did United a favour and after months of playing catch up, they were finally rewarded.

For a while it looked as though United were going to have to settle with remaining at second place, as the game at the Liberty Stadium looked certain to end in a goalless draw, but seven minutes from time, Luke Moore guided in Wayne Routledge's cross to put Swansea in front, undoubtedly provoking mass excitement from any United fans watching.

Obviously the games weren't without the controversy. Micah Richards late effort really could have saved the day for City, until Sian Massey ruled he was offside (who needs Howard Webb eh?)

Swansea had their fair share of drama as well, the game could have been far less tense had Scott Sinclair not missed his penalty early on in the game. It was a weak effort from the midfielder, allowing Hart to make an easy save. Sinclair had not previously missed a penalty in 14 attempts, luckily his error did not cost them the game.

Manchester United's game only slightly less dramatic, with Rooney giving Hernandez a helping hand in the first half, giving him his 25th goal of the season, and then making it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the second half. Danny Welbeck disappointed fans when he failed to score in the second half, after making it past the keeper before missing an open goal. Alex Ferguson expressed his confidence that the game was won with 20 minutes to go, when the hightly rated Paul Pogba was brought on for Scholes, provoking loud cheers from the crowd.
It was a difficult game for WBA who, after being reduced to 10 men, really struggled to get back in the game. Manager Roy Hodgson  wasn't overly impressed with the performance after Rooney's first goal"I didn't think we were attacking as well as we could do in that period. When we won the ball back we lost it too quickly and easily.''

Spirits were high at Old Trafford, but no cheer was louder than after the result at the Liberty Stadium score was announced.

United are now favourites to win their 20th title, after having taken top place with only ten games to go. Mancini isn't worried, Fergie is confident. Whatever happens, it's safe to say the Manchester derby on the 30th April is going to be a match not to miss!
